In that game, you’d explore an open world city at night, but then would be thrown into more traditional and linear campaign levels. In that sense, Halo 3: ODST also comes to mind. This is the structure of Halo Infinite - except a huge chunk of the game takes place within this framework, not just one level. Firefights across open nature are instantly replaced by claustrophobic corridors. You use that vehicle to tear through semi-open environments before reaching an installation that you enter and explore. You start out on a beach, with a vehicle and Marine buddies. The fourth mission of the original game, it is the archetypal Halo experience. Halo Infinite’s open world, for instance, owes less to the slew of open world adventures on the market now and more to the original Halo’s most-beloved level, The Silent Cartographer. ![]() That doesn’t just involve bringing it back to the original, but also includes touching base with everything that has come since. In many ways, it feels appropriately cyclical - the titular Halo is a ring, and the game at large works to bring the entire series full circle. Infinite feels like a resolutely introspective game, examining the Halo series at large and then working to reuse, reference, and refine every element that makes this franchise tick for a new generation. Infinite feels like a coming-of-age for Halo studio 343 Industries, a developer created with the sole task of continuing the Master Chief’s adventures that has nevertheless struggled to step out of the shadow of Halo’s creators. In fact, it’s more of an evolution than a revolution. ![]() ![]() But the truth about Halo Infinite is this: it’s less revelatory than you might think. That’s arguably an earth-shattering revelation for a series that has up until now been a pretty traditionally-structured shooter, and so it’s rightfully grabbed the headlines. The long delay to development may have helped the Halo Infinite campaign reach a higher level of polish, but its multiplayer may have benefitted even more from the extra development time.Halo Infinite has one barn-storming new feature in its campaign mode: the fact that it’s technically an ‘open world’ game. Many games get a beta period, but Infinite's has been long, with plenty of chances for prospective players to try it out. In regards to the multiplayer's progression over the last year, 343i has been rather transparent. It won't be an easy task for Halo Infinite to introduce new, inventive gameplay elements while making sure it still feels like a Halo game. Though Halo 5's multiplayer was generally well-received, Halo Infinite is something of a comeback opportunity for the long-running series. With Halo adopting the now common live service model with its first ever free-to-play multiplayer, fan feedback will likely play a bigger role than ever. There's really no telling what state the multiplayer was in at the time of the infamous campaign reveal, but players have had a chance to participate in multiple test flights. Though the only real comparison that can made from promotional campaign footage is in regards to its graphics, Halo Infinite's multiplayer might have had more tangible benefits due to the delay. Character models and environmental textures especially are of much higher quality, but the extra time has likely given 343 a chance to work on the campaign's game mechanics as well. There has been some debate on whether or not some lighting changes in cutscenes are for the better, but Halo Infinite's graphical transformation has overall pushed the game in the right direction. There is understandably a lack of detail that can be attributed as inherent to designing a larger game space, but Halo Infinite looked particularly rough from a visual standpoint when early campaign footage was shown off last summer. Infinite is attempting to take the Halo series in an unprecedented direction by converting the campaign to some from of an open world format. Although many factors likely contributed to Halo Infinite's delay, including complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, an extremely lackluster campaign reveal certainly played a large part in the decision.
